Before I start, I just want to point out to everybody that I love Doctor Who as much as the next obsessed fan. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the journeys that the Doctor has with the companions, and have loved all of the past companions for different reasons. However, I feel that there needs to be a shake-up in the make-up of the ‘leading lady’. After seeing her in action in Asylum of the Daleks, I already firmly believe that Jenna-Louise Coleman, also known as Oswin Oswald, also known as Souffle Girl, is the companion I’ve been searching for.
Oswin seems to be the first companion in New Who that is not from the ‘present day’. This makes a welcome change, as I’d love to see episodes when the Doctor returns to whenever Oswin is from time to time, just like he did with Rose, Martha, Donna, Amy and Rory. It’ll be nice to possibly explore a whole new time zone, with Oswin being the comfortable one in the situation. Where ‘home’ is, however, is still a mystery. She could be from the distant planet, in an time that knows of the Daleks and the destruction they cause. On the other hand, she could be from Victorian England, as evidenced by the set photographs of the Christmas 2012 episode. Or, she could be neither of those, and actually be a time traveller herself, as she has the technological prowess to hack into a Dalek fleet and erase all mention of the Doctor. Was that pure Oswin, or was that a little bit Daleky-Waleky?
Even after experiencing Jenna-Louise’s character for one episode, I think it’s safe to say that she is going to be a character that can hold her own. She isn’t going to be a companion who wants to be romantically attached to the Doctor. Infact, if anything, I think that the Doctor is going to become extremely fond of her, and she won’t have any of it!
When Rose was onboard the TARDIS with the Ninth Doctor, I wanted them to get together, because it seemed like the best thing to do. The Doctor, a tall, handsome, clever stranger, whisking his companions around the universe, and back in time for tea was something amazing. The viewer was travelling with him, experiencing new worlds and times. It was as if we were going along for the ride too. Skip forward to 2012, and I feel that Oswin is going to be a personification of the new breed of audience. We know what the Daleks are, we are used to Cybermen fleets being sent back into the Void again and again. Hell, even the Weeping Angels aren’t giving us the heebie-jeebies any more. When the Doctor takes Oswin to a new time zone, he is going to have to do everything in his power to make his new companion, and us, go ‘wow’. I feel that Steven Moffat is on his way to doing that; he’s made me rethink how scary the Daleks can be!
Even after experiencing her badassness (is that even a word?!) for just one short and heartbreaking episode, I am going to put all of my cards on the table.. Oswin Oswald will be one of, if not THE, greatest companion since New Who’s inception.
Agreed. Nothing more to add;
Exactly. I wish they keep Oswin Oswin. She’s such a powerful character, that if the new companion is her sister/ect,...
