The A to Z of Harry Potter
X is for Xenophilius and Luna Lovegood
“Xenophilius and Luna Lovegood are father and daughter. Both play an active role in the production and distribution of the magazine The Quibbler. Mrs. Lovegood, the wife of the former and mother of the latter accidentally died by practicing experimental charms when Luna was aged nine.
Raised on her own, it is believed that Xenophilius imposed some of his eccentric theories and ideas upon a young Luna, which explains the way Luna acts around others. However, some of these theories were not as ‘crazy’ as first seemed. For example, he believed the existence of the Deathly Hallows, and supported Harry when most of the wizarding world was out to catch him.
Both Xenophilius and Luna Lovegood were sorted into Ravenclaw House at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Luna joined Dumbledore’s Army in her fourth year, becoming a very integral part of the group, co-leading the team when Hogwarts fell under the control of Voldemort.
Because of Xenophilius’ support for Potter during the Second Wizarding War, Luna Lovegood was taken by Death Eaters and held ransom at Malfoy Manor. In spring of 1998, she was freed by Dobby, and stayed at Shell Cottage for a number of weeks.
Meanwhile, in a bid to save the (then) trapped Luna, Xenophilius attemped to betray Harry Potter to Death Eaters, but failed. He was temporarily imprisoned in Azkaban, being dropped of all charges after Voldemort was defeated.
In the years after the Second Wizarding War, Luna married Rolf Scamander, giving Xenophilius two gransons, Lorcan and Lysander Scamander.”
